Daniels Park is one of our favorite picnic area's. It is also supposed to be
one of the last spots that Kit Carson stopped at before he died. This is an excellent
place to soak up the "Western" experience
Daniels Park is located approx 8 miles North West of Castle Rock.
From Castle Rock head north on Hwy 85 (aka Sante Fe Rd.) towards Denver, Daniels Park Road
is a right turn (east) before you hit the town of Sedalia. The Road to Daniels Park used
to be (last year) a dirt road, but with all the growth, 2 golf courses and a few
"very expensive" homes it is now almost completely paved. Once you get to the
park (left side of road) you will overlook a huge drop off with many different parking
area's, each with picnic benches and each with a different view out over the
"valley" and the mountains beyond.
Daniels Park is perfect for Late picnics and then watching the sunset. As the sun sets,
the temperature drops very quickly, so bring jackets in the summer, and heat in the winter
(get in the car fast). We once waited too long with the picnic & couldn't get
hamburgers to cook on the grill (no kidding - that cold) But with the sunshine in
Colorado, during the day it's nice even in the winter.
As I said there are several pullouts with parking, but if you stop at the first one, and
walk south for a while there are remains of what once was a building, this is not the site
of Mr. Carson's stopover, but it does give you a better feel of "how it used to
be". If you plan your trip right - across the road from the park is a large fenced in
property where Buffalo still roam. This adds a little more Ambiance to the visit.
As the sunsets to the west, the view to the north becomes the center attraction, as the
lights come up in southwest Denver. This will bring you back to 2001 in a hurry.
