The Town of Deckers is located 1 hour away from Castle Rock
Take Highway 85 (Sante Fe) North to Sedalia, turn left at Sedalia
and head west for 28 miles to Deckers. You will hit a Y in the road and which
way you go will depend on your vehicle, and your stomach. The road to the right
is quicker, but the grade is extremely steep at some points. Vehicles towing
trailers are not allowed on this road. The road to the left is not as steep but
it has many bends and is much longer, and rougher on the stomach of passengers.
Once you reach the bottom of the hill you will dead end at the South Platte
River, turn left (South) and head on to Deckers.
Deckers is not a town by most definitions. There is a Store, a
Fly shop, a few "rooms" to rent for fishermen, and a Bar/ Restaurant
which is not currently open. A Campground, and some of the best "Gold
Medal" water is the main attraction here. This spot is so popular with
local fishermen, that hardly anyone complains that fishermen are almost elbow to
elbow on some days.
Anywhere along the South Platte here provides excellent Fly
Fishing. Be aware that Gold Medal Water means very restrictive rules for
fishing. Generally Flies & lures only, 16 inch minimum and Limit of 2 fish
per license. Some areas are Catch & Release only, and be aware that there
are several "Private Properties" Always ask before you fish ( hunt). Licenses are available at the Fly Shop (and Dick is a great source
for the Day's best "Flies & Lies"). Always check the most recent
regulations from the State, rules change.
Several Day Use picnic area's are available along the river also,
so even if you don't fish, this trip makes a great day out in the mountains,
with a picnic, without using the whole day.
WARNING FISHERMEN - This area is
heavily fished by the best, and the fish here seem extremely smart, if your
feelings are hurt on days you don't catch anything, this place will test your
patience
